The first television series produced by Eiji Tsyburaya - the special effects wizard behind Toho's Godzilla franchise - was originally intended to be an anthologized series of horror stories, titled Unbalance, made in the same vein as shows like The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone. However, by the time production had been finalized, the show was retitled Ultra Q, with Tsuburaya Productions actually making Horror Theater Unbalance in 1973. Ultra Q stuck close to the original concept, with each episode featuring a new and weird paranormal element investigated by a group of reoccurring characters - making the show feel somewhat in step with later television programs like The X-Files. Ultra Q takes place in a world of weirdness, including monsters, aliens, ghosts, alternate dimensions and all manner of science fiction and horror tropes, and it would eventually spin-off into the popular series Ultraman. As the show's opening narration often states, "For the next 30 minutes, your eyes will leave your body and enter inside this fantasy time..."
